Discover Bhutan: A Top Sustainable Travel Destination filled with Cultural Harmony and Happiness

Updated: Jul 16

Bhutan, the Land of the Thunder Dragon, is a mystical Himalayan kingdom renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and pioneering approach to sustainable development. Despite its difficult-to-track history up to the 7th century, Bhutan experienced significant growth in Buddhism after it was introduced by Tibet. This unique blend of spirituality and history makes Bhutan a must-visit destination for any travel enthusiast.

Embark on a journey to Bhutan and discover the magic of a country that seamlessly blends tradition, nature, and happiness. From its ancient monasteries and fortresses to its pristine landscapes and unique cultural heritage, Bhutan offers an unparalleled travel experience.

Bhutan's Cultural and Religious Heritage are Factors in this Top Sustainable Travel Destination

Bhutan is not just a travel destination; it’s an experience that transforms the way you see the world. Buddhism shapes the lives of the Bhutanese people, with roots tracing back to the 7th century when two Buddhist temples were built near Paro by the Tibetan Emperor, Strongtsen Gampo. Initially, these temples were not widely used by the Bhutanese. It wasn’t until the 8th century, with the arrival of Guru Padmasambhava (known as Guru Rinpoche in Bhutan), that Buddhism began to flourish in the region.

In the 17th century, the arrival of Drukpa monk Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal marked a pivotal moment in Bhutan's history. He unified the country under a single theological identity and established the Bhutanese theocratic government. Bhutan became a harmonious blend of different branches of Buddhism, including Mahāyāna Buddhism (particularly Vajrayāna), Drukpa Kargyu Buddhism, and Nyingma Buddhism.

Although the theocratic government eventually fell out of power, the influence of Buddhism persisted and continues to thrive today, with most Bhutanese still practicing the religion. Bhutan remains the only country with Vajrayāna Buddhism as its state religion. By visiting Bhutan, you can experience firsthand how Buddhism shapes the country's cultural heritage and the daily lives of its people.

While viewing Bhutan's unique and carefully crafted thangka paintings, murals, sculptures, and architecture like dzongs and chortens, you will experience the profound interconnection between people and nature rooted in Buddhist teachings. This harmony is reflected in the Bhutanese way of life and their emphasis on holistic well-being, which led to the creation of Gross National Happiness (GNH) by Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the 4th King of Bhutan. Through this cultural immersion, you'll gain insight into how Bhutanese spirituality and art contribute to a unique and balanced approach to life.

Sustainable Tourism and Serving Community: Supporting Bhutan’s Vision

Bhutan’s deep connection to its cultural heritage and surrounding environment has led to a strong focus on preserving both, making it a top sustainable travel destination. The country works diligently to protect its Buddhist traditions, cultural landmarks, and natural landscapes. As the first carbon-negative country, Bhutan exemplifies environmental stewardship. Its constitution mandates that 60% of the country remains forested, and currently, 72.4% of Bhutan is covered in lush greenery, making it a haven for wildlife and natural beauty.

This commitment to nature is mirrored in the Bhutanese way of life, where 80% of the population is involved in agriculture and sustainable practices are deeply ingrained in their culture. By visiting Bhutan, you can witness firsthand how this unique approach to sustainability and preservation enriches the country's cultural and natural landscapes.

By traveling on one of Global Family Travels’ Bhutan trips, you’re supporting Bhutan’s vision of sustainable tourism. The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) ensures that your visit contributes to the preservation of the environment and the well-being of local communities. This fee supports:

  • Environmental Conservation: Protecting forests, wildlife, and promoting eco-friendly practices.

  • Community Development: Enhancing infrastructure and services for Bhutanese communities.

  • Environmental Tours: Learn about Bhutan’s conservation efforts, visit national parks, and explore its diverse ecosystems.
