Global Family Travels, a longtime supporter of the Siddhartha School Project (SSP), is pleased to spread the word about their #GivingTuesday Campaign. SSP is a great organization that educates children in Ladakh,  high in mountains of Northern India, and is unique in its efforts to preserve and enhance the local culture. By helping the ‪#‎OurSSP‬‬‬ campaign, we can bring boys’ and girls’ washrooms and a kitchen to the school.

In support of SSP, join Global Family Travels in 2015 for an amazing cultural immersion experience in India. Both our Little Tibet: Learn, Serve and Immerse tour  and  Mystical Moments Spiritual Tour to India tour offer visitors and host community participants an opportunity to make a difference together. Highlights of our 2015 tours to India include the opportunity to live and work with a Ladakhi host family and to participate in a community service projects with local villagers, and meet the student you sponsor at the Siddhartha School, as well as the student’s family.  We will also enjoy a morning assembly at SSP with the students at the school, and tea with its founder, Khen Rinpoche.

About the Siddhartha School Project:

Khen Rinpoche Lobzang Tsetan, a Tibetan Buddhist monk and educator, founded the Siddhartha School in 1995 in his remote home village of Stok, Ladakh. What started in a one-room shed is now an exemplary private school with over 200 students in grades K through 10, and the school is one-of-a-kind in its efforts to preserve and enhance the local culture. Unique to Ladakh, Siddhartha School is the only private school in Ladakh that accepts students regardless of their ability to pay tuition and no child is denied admission on the basis of need. There is no other private school in Ladakh offering a first-rate education to the poor, and children come by bus from as far away as Leh, the capital.

Enjoy an afternoon of Indian cooking and dancing to help educate girls in India, and learn more about Global Family TravelsIllustrious India tour.  At our fun and informative Bellevue event, we’ll learn how to cook Pakoras, a classic Indian finger food and Soji Halwa, a sweet Indian dessert. In addition to creative cooking,  Ojasvi Sinha from Bolly Dance School in Issaquah will provide us with some Bollywood Dance instructions.

The Wings School, A pilot endeavor of the Kiran Anjali Project, is a day school that works to transform the lives of girls in India from villages by providing them with free, quality education and job training so that they can be examples within their communities. Most families at the school live on less than $2 a day. Many of the students at Wings are at high risk for exploitation. By providing the girls with healthy meals as well as an education, families are encouraged to keep their daughters in school. You and your family have a real opportunity to grow the global village of families connecting east and west by supporting students at the Wings School.

Educate Girls in India

In addition to learning how you can help educate girls in India,  Global Family Travels will provide an overview of our Illustrious India tour.  From Mumbai to New Delhi, this all-inclusive tour of India will allow you to experience the vibrant sights and sounds of Indian city life first-hand.  During this excursion you and your family will visit iconic places such as the Taj Mahal and the banks of the Ganges River, the Gateway of India and the Elephanta Caves. You can read our full tour description here and we hope you’ll join us in August, 2015.

Educate Girls in India

This fun, free event to educate girls in India is sponsored by Global Family Travels, with our partners, the Kiran Anjali Project, and Creative Journeys, and will take place on Sunday, November 16th from 2-4pm at the Newport Yacht Club in Bellevue. While the event is free, we recommend a small donation to the school. You can RSVP here and we hope to see you!

Ebola and travel Global Family Travels is excited about our 2015 Africa: Learn, Serve, Immerse tour which provides participants opportunities to be immersed in the amazing history and customs of South Africa, encounter the majestic lions of Africa up-close in Zimbabwe and be awed by the pristine wetlands and wildlife in Botswana.  At the forefront of many travelers minds planning a trip to any African country is the concern about the outbreak of  Ebola and travel to West Africa. We hope that information provided in this blog will ease apprehensions and help travelers realize that they don’t need to cancel their trip to Southern or East Africa due to Ebola and travel concerns. So what are the risks in Southern and East Africa regarding Ebola and Travel? So far there have been no confirmed cases of Ebola in either Southern or East Africa. Most travelers from West Africa tend to have Europe and North America as their final destinations as opposed to other regions of Africa.  Of course there is always a chance that the Ebola virus could cross borders to other countries, but the reality is that Southern and East Africa are located far from currently affected areas, and in fact Europe is at much greater risk if these distances are taken into account.

Ebola and travel

Service Learning in Cape Town, South Africa

Here are some average distances from the affected region to other parts of Africa:

  • Cape Town, South Africa – 5797km
  • Arusha, Tanzania – 5694km
  • Nairobi, Kenya – 5656km
  • Maun, Botswana – 5114km

Europe and South America are actually much closer to the affect region in Africa:

  • Madrid, Spain – 3600 km
  • London, UK – 4936km
  • Recife, Brazil – 3026km

Ebola and travel How are Southern and East Africa responding to the potential threat of Ebola? Governments within the Southern and Eastern African regions have put in place precautionary measures to ensure that Ebola does not spread to these parts of the continent. Medical resources in these regions of operation are often better than those in West Africa. These precautionary steps that parts of Europe and America are only starting to implement now have been in place here since the early days of this outbreak:

  • Infrared Thermal Imaging Cameras are in use at International Airports and other ports of entry to identify anyone who may have a fever.
  • Rigorous checks on travel history and interviews where necessary are also part of the screening process.
  • Any individuals suspected of possibly carrying the virus are put under surveillance.
  • Response units have been put up and the relevant personnel trained to react accordingly in the event of a suspected case.

This information was accurate at the time we posted this blog and based on the latest information available.  For further updates, we recommend that travelers consult the World Health Organization’s latest information on the Ebola Virus Outbreak.

Global Family Travels was recently featured on the Seattle Channel as part of a spotlight on non-tech entrepreneurship in Seattle. Global Family Travels is really fortunate to be based in the greater Seattle area, where there is a great spirit of entrepreneurship and community for small businesses.

However, being a non-tech business in a tech-focused community hasn’t been without struggles. Luckily, we have been able to join forces with four other non-tech businesses and form NBO – New Business Opportunities. NBO is a group of entrepreneurs who collaborate to help individual members accomplish their business start-up goals by providing expert advice, constructive feedback and idea generation as the members develop their own businesses. Through NBO, we have been able to create a supportive community that is sometimes lacking for individual small businesses.

Building community is a core tenet of Global Family Travels, and also what makes our company different than other travel companies. Our philosophy of Learn, Serve and Immerse is a way of building global communities by connecting families of different cultures. Our tours offer both the visiting families and host community participants an opportunity to make a difference together, and to learn from each other in ways that will open their hearts and minds to a greater awareness that we are all connected.

We’d also like to mention our other NBO members and hope that you will show them support as well:

We have always felt that Turkey is a safe and wonderful place for family friendly travel and our guest author Susan Moe shares her family experience in this amazing country.

My husband and I had traveled to Istanbul while on a backpacking trip early in our marriage. We fell in love with the people, the city, the culture, the vibe, and of course, the delectable food!! We had the opportunity to return a decade or so later back in 2009, but this time with three small children in tow. People told us we were crazy. It was too dangerous they warned. We were undeterred.

family friendly travels in Turkey

Istanbul

While the city had changed dramatically in terms of improved infrastructure, shopping, and other modern conveniences, it goes without saying that the breathtaking historical and cultural attractions remained the same. Walking through the Aya Sophia and Blue Mosque is mind blowing; eating kebabs in the ancient bazaar is priceless, as is negotiating with the shop keepers for something to bring home.

However, the spirit of the city and its lovely inhabitants are what make this such an incredible family friendly destination. Everywhere we went, we were warmly welcomed, greeted with sincere smiles, and shown genuine generosity.  At the fish market, for example, each of the kids was handed a small sea horse to take home. Clearly, we were tourists and not going to be buying any fish to cook in our hotel room, so there was no ulterior motive on behalf of the giver.

One of our favorite memories was a spontaneous visit to a packed barber shop on a Friday night (my youngest son loves to get his hair cut).  We couldn’t communicate with the people working there, but by gesturing, understood we were welcomed. Each of the children was given the same time and attention as the adult patrons. They received shampoos, long head and shoulder massages, and a detailed haircut that still ranks as one of their best! Not only that, but one of the workers, on his own initiative, walked across the street and bought a fruit slushie for each of the kids!

We’d love to go back and explore more of this country that holds such a special place in our hearts!

Global Family Travels’ mission is to “Learn, Serve and Immerse,” using family travel as a means to build cultural bridges and to foster global citizens. Every Global Family Travels’ itinerary features educational sightseeing, cultural immersion, home stays or visits with local families, meaningful service projects, and perhaps most importantly, fun activities designed to keep all ages happy and engaged. Let’s delve into these tenets a bit more:

family travelLearn:

At Global Family Travels, we believe the most powerful way to learn is through first-hand experience, by allowing the country and its people to be our teachers. Each tour has unique educational opportunities to learn about the culture and history of the countries we visit, as well as a pre-trip learning session with helpful words and phrases, and tips on cultural “do’s and don’ts.”

family travelServe:

Our enriching tours offer both trip participants and the host community opportunities to work together on a local service projects aimed at improving the lives of people in the communities we visit.

family travelImmerse:

Tour participants become immersed in the culture of the communities we visit by experiencing daily life with the locals!

For example, our China: Learn, Serve, Immerse (LSI) tour emphasizes authentic cultural experiences to give our travelers a true taste of China and a chance to immerse themselves in the local customs and culture.  Besides visiting some of its best-loved destinations, such as the Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors, the China tour gives travelers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local customs and culture. The tour provides two amazing opportunities for participants: Working with wildlife in a Sichuan panda sanctuary; and also living and working with a host family while participating in a community service project with local villagers of the Qiang Minority culture in Sichuan Province.

family travel

During the homestay part of the LSI tour, participants become familiar with the rhythm of daily life in rural China by assisting their host family with daily chores, tending animals, working fields, playing with the children or getting to know their host family.

In 2015, we offer tours to China, India, Nicaragua, Peru, South Africa and Turkey! To find out more about our tours, please visit http://globalfamilytravels.com
